Dottie Says...
By Dottie Thomas

By now we have all made those New Year's resolutions. We also have broken many of them. However, one that we should certainly make and keep is that of registering to become a donor for a life-saving marrow or stem cell transplant. Do it now, do not just think about doing it. To reinforce the need for volunteer donors, I would like to quote from Diane Brutoco, a patient who received a marrow transplant at the Hutchinson Center in 1988. Diane was one of the key speakers at the dedication of the new Thomas building last June. When she finished her story, almost everyone was trying to brush away the tears. Here is part of Diane's moving talk.

"Ten years ago I knew I had a wonderful life--a loving and devoted husband and four children who made my days all I had ever hoped they would be. Then everything changed. I was told that I had leukemia and that there was no cure for it and that I would soon die. Die before my oldest, then 10, went to high school and before my darling 18-month -old went to kindergarten. What would they do without their Mom?"

Fortunately Diane was one of the lucky ones who found a matching volunteer donor. She is now leading a very busy, productive life as a wife, mother and volunteer who helps others like her to find donors. Please take the time to locate the donor center near you to be typed. You may never be called upon to donate more blood or marrow. But you might just be the person to make the difference for someone like Diane, a mom or dad who desperately wants to see the children grow up. If you do not know where to find a donor center, call the toll- free number of the National Marrow Donor Program, 1-800-526-7809.
