Mr. Carreras recently received the Medal of Honor from the University of Coimbra, Portugal, for his contribution to Portugese culture. The University appreciates his representation of Portugal in numerous concerts, and his manifestation of a great friendship for the country. This medal is presented to outstanding personalities of many diverse talents. As a tribute from the University to Mr. Carreras, the Choros of the Antiguos Orfeonistas (Chorus of Ancient Singers), the highly prestigious University choir, honored Mr. Carreras with interpretations of Verdi and one of the most well known traditional songs of Coimbra. Rutgers University, New Jersey will also be honoring Mr. Carreras with an honorary degree in May, 2002.
